Each Sparrowhawk Leather piece is made to order by skilled Leather Artisan, Fiona Ritchie.

Fiona uses time honoured leathercraft techniques, including hand embossing and hand dyeing, allowing Sparrowhawk customers specify the colour and personalization of their piece.

By carefully selecting the leather to cut from the hide, and hand rubbing their dye colour to enhance its individual grain, Fiona crafts a one-off piece, with a unique finish, that is exclusively theirs.

Fiona's leather knowledge, designs and craftsmanship ensures each customer's Sparrowhawk leather piece is fit for purpose, beautiful and stands the test of time.

It takes knowledge, practiced techniques, and the best materials to achieve true leather craftsmanship. From 2014, when I made my first Pilot Logbook Cover following 3 days private tuition at a working tannery in Sydney, True Leather Craftsmanship has been my gold standard for Sparrowhawk.

Since then, I have made close to 1000 leather pieces from my Hunua Farm workshop. These include wallets, journal covers and documents holders. Each one is custom made, and personalised for its owner. Sparrowhawk Leather’s renowned Pilot Logbook covers are trusted and treasured by hundreds of pilots across NZ and Australia.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most times of the year, please allow 10 working days for our Leather Artisan, Fiona Ritchie, to make your order, plus Courier Delivery time.
More time may be needed at certain times of the year including Christmas, Father’s Day and Mother's Day, when Fiona has a high number of orders to make.
When we receive your order, we will send you an email to confirm our making time. You will be able to cancel your order at that time, should our making time be unworkable for you. If we do not hear from you within 12 hours, we will consider you have agreed to our making time, and will accept your payment and Fiona will start making your order.
If you need your order earlier for a special occasion, Fiona may be able to make in 4 working days. This will involve her working longer hours, so a $40 premium will apply. Remember, there will still be Courier Delivery time. Please contact Fiona to arrange.
If you want to gift your piece earlier than Fiona is able to make it; we can prepare a personalised Gift Card with your message and details of the piece you have ordered, plus expected delivery date. If you would like the person to be able to specify their own leather colours & personalisation details, you may choose to purchase a Gift Certificate for the product you have chosen.

The letters are 6mm high each. More than 4 letters can look a little too large. Lower case letters are not available in the alphabet embossing set. Please type your initials how you would like them, including the dots or no dots. When we email to confirm our making time and the details of your order, we will confirm your preference regarding dots with initials. We have two standard fonts for you to choose from. One sans serif and one serif. We will confirm your preference when we email to confirm details of your order.

Fiona has recommended hand dyed leather colour and hand dyed waxed Irish Linen thread stitching combinations that she knows work well with this design.
If you would like another colour, please Contact Fiona.
If you wish to see a WIP photo, please be aware it will take us time to photograph and email, and we will have to stop work while waiting for your approval and recommence later. This means our completion may be delayed. An additional admin fee of $15 will apply.

This means we guarantee your Sparrowhawk Leather piece will do what it is made to do, for a reasonable length of time given reasonable use and leather care.

Your Sparrowhawk Leather piece will match the photograph and descriptions on our website, except for the natural variations found in leather, through hand dyeing, and any customisation that you have requested. i.e. colour. It will give you a reasonable amount of service given reasonable use and leather care.

If there is a problem with your Sparrowhawk Leather piece, please contact us. If your piece has been used in a reasonable fashion for its function, and you have taken care of the leather in line with our Care Instruction, in most circumstances we will repair your piece free of charge.
