How is it made?

The genuine leather Mariner's Logbook Cover is made from top grain, hand finished, or vegetable tanned, full grain, "raw" russet leather. The leather is cut to an approximate size for the front cover, and the two keepers for the logbook. The keepers and covers are fitted, corners shaped, edges bevelled, and stitching lines grooved around the perimeter. The leather is cased and an edge groover used to create the lines on the keepers. After accurately measuring the location of the nameplate, two holes are punched through the leather cover, and the nameplate is hand riveted. A protective coating is applied to the inside of the leather. Then several coats of dye are hand applied to the outside of the leather. The colour on all pieces is then sealed, waxed and polished. Then the keepers are fitted to the cover, and the stitching holes around the perimeter are punched through, 3 at a time with a stitching chisel tool and rawhide mallet. Next, the three parts are handstitched using Irish Linen waxed thread in a two needle saddle stitch. All the outside edges are burnish and touched up with dye if necessary. Finally, a finishing wax and polish is applied.

Construction:

Genuine hand finished leather (vegetable tanned, full grain leather), hand stitched with 4 ply waxed Irish Linen thread, stainless steel nameplate with high wear nickel rivets.
