The custom made Notebook / Journal Cover pictured is finished in Rock Embossed Dark Brown Antique and stitched with black waxed linen thread. The "How it is Made" below describes how Fiona made this item. You can select your leather finish, colour, embossed wings piece colour and embossed initials option above.

How is it made?

The full grain leather Notebook / Journal Cover is made from full grain, hand finished, or vegetable tanned, "raw" leather. The leather is cut to an approximate size for the front cover, and the two keepers for the notebook. The keepers and covers are fitted, and the corners shaped, and edges bevelled, stitching lines grooved around the perimeter. The leather is cased. If initials are to be embossed, after accurately measuring the location of the initials, each initial is selected, lined up and individually embossed using a rawhide mallet. The Sparrowhawk maker's stamp applied to the inside front cover keeper in a similar fashion. A rock is then ground into the leather of the front cover, randomly, but carefully, to make the pattern. A protective coating is applied to the inside of the leather. Then several coats of dye are lightly, hand applied to the leather, and an antique paste applied. The colour on all pieces is then sealed, waxed and polished. Then the keepers are fitted to the front cover, and the stitching holes around the perimeter are punched through, 3 at a time with a stitching chisel tool and rawhide mallet. Next, these three parts are hand stitched together using Irish Linen waxed thread in a two needle saddle stitch. All the outside edges are burnished and touched up with dye if necessary. Finally, a finishing wax and polish is applied.
