How is it made?
The Leather Journal / Notebook Cover is handcrafted from full grain, hand finished, or vegetable tanned, "raw" leather. The leather is cut to an approximate size for the back and spine, the front cover, and the two keepers for the diary. The keepers and covers are fitted, the corners shaped, the edges bevelled, and stitching lines grooved around the perimeter and edge of the spine. The leather is cased and the initials are carefully aligned and stamped with a rawhide mallet, then an edge groover used to create the lines on the keepers. Then several coats of dye are hand applied to the outside of leather. For each application of dye, a paintbrush is used to apply the dye around the border made by the stitching groover. The front cover, back cover and keepers being dyed separately. The colour on all pieces is then sealed, waxed and polished. The front and back cover's are re-measured to fit to the notebook. This measurement allows for the overlap of the spine to the front cover. The stitching holes along the spine are carefully hand chiselled and the edge of the spine hand burnished with a wooden burnisher. The front cover is attached to the spine, the stitching holes repunched through the join and the two pieces hand stitched together using Irish Linen waxed thread in a two needle saddle stitch. Then the keepers are fitted to the cover, and the stitching holes around the perimeter are punched through, 3 at a time with a stitching chisel tool and rawhide mallet. Next, the keepers parts are hand stitched to the front cover. All the outside edges are burnished and touched up with dye if necessary. Finally, a finishing wax and polish is applied.
