The Sparrowhawk Pilot Wallet - Your treasured gift

Want to give a gift the Pilot in your life will treasure? Commission me to make his Sparrowhawk Leather Pilot's Wallet.

He'll know your wallet gift is very special.

The Sparrowhawk Leather box tells him his wallet is handmade here in NZ. His initials, as specified by you, will be hand embossed on the front cover of his wallet, along with distinctive Pilot Wings. He'll find Sparrowhawk's leather artisan makers stamp on the back.

He'll know from the unmistakable look, feel and smell of the full grain leather hand dyed in the colour you specified. Then there's my leather embossing / dye sample included. He'll also find my hand written card describing how you specially commissioned his wallet, and how I made it for you.

Looking inside his wallet, he'll appreciate the fine calf leather with two (2) full sized note pockets for a second currency (one zipped), six (6) card slots, licence / ID display, & zipped coin pocket (change for his pre-flight coffee.

It takes time to create your Pilot's special wallet, so please allow me 15 working days to complete your commission, ready for courier dispatch to you.

When you commission your leather pilots wallet gift, I hand cut the outside from a "raw", undyed vegetable tan hide. I cut my pieces sequentially, and select a part of the hide with right thickness and unique grain characteristics that will best respond to my hand rubbed dyeing.

I tool the raw leather, then hand emboss each initial using an individual brass letter stamp and a rawhide mallet, along with Sparrowhawk Leather's pilot wings and maker stamp. This achieves an unmistakable handmade look and I am able to highlight the embossing by leaving their detail highlighted.

For the colour, I hand rub the dye into leather using cotton rags in circular movements in several layers. This brings out the grain characteristics of your unique piece of leather. I then rub in an antique paste to further highlight the colour for medium brown, antique black and oxblood wallets. Once cured, I apply a sealer coat and burnish the edges.

Hand stitching the outside leather to the inner is done using the time honoured, leather artisan technique. Each stitching hole is hand pierced individually with an awl, and I stitch with a 2 needle saddlers stitch using Irish Linen Waxed thread. Finally, I touch up the stitching holes with dye, and then wax and polish the leather.
