NZ 100% Full Grain Black Aniline Leather

In September 2016, our leather artisan, Fiona Ritchie, designed a new, contemporary update on the mass produced, vinyl finish, Black Pilot logbook cover. First step was to find a full grain leather which retained the individual grain character within a solid black colour. She next experimented with a personalised laser engraved wings and initials patch with feature hand stitching. This distinctive leather logbook cover and today is one of Sparrowhawk leather’s most popular pilot logbook covers.
The full grain, black aniline dyed leather is produced at a NZ Tannery. It retains the hide’s natural surface and grain characteristics giving it a quality look, feel and smell. The Whisky Aniline patch has a great depth of colour, and is the perfect background for your personalised laser engraving.

Fiona uses time honoured leathercraft techniques, including hand embossing and hand dyeing, allowing Sparrowhawk customers specify the colour and

By carefully selecting the leather to cut from the hide, and hand rubbing their dye colour to enhance its individual grain, Fiona crafts a piece with an exceedingly rare look, that is uniquely theirs.

Fiona's leather knowledge, designs and craftsmanship ensures each customer's Sparrowhawk
leather piece is fit for purpose, beautiful and stands the test of time.

Our Founder

Fiona Ritchie Leather Artisan & Pilots Wife

Sparrowhawk Leather took flight in 2014 when I made my first Pilot Logbook cover for my Airline pilot husband, Nick. Unable to find a robust, handmade leather cover like the one he’d purchased 30 years earlier, Nick asked that I make covers to fit his current and older logbook.

Since then, I have made over 500 personalised leather logbook covers for pilots in New Zealand, Australia, US, UK and Hong Kong. As Sparrowhawk Leather became known, pilots requested more personalisation and custom made options, as well as Pilot Licence wallets and Men’s wallets. Today Sparrowhawk Leather makes the widest range of Pilot Logbook Covers available in the world, all from my Farm Workshop in Hunua, New Zealand.

Beautiful Craftsmanship

We ordered a logbook cover for our son. His face lit up when he saw it and even more when he noticed his name engraved. A beautifully crafted piece of work that will last a lifetime and be treasured. Highly recommend. Love the personal touch included with the back story to Fiona, her husband Nick and their plane.

I researched online before buying. Her products were so unique and nothing can beat the designs and quality she is offering in the entire Australasia.
